Route 1 – Alfama

In this tour through Alfama we intend to explore a little of the old city, but with a low level of strain and therefore, instead of climbing the hill, we will be walking perpendicular to the Tagus River, towards the Cathedral.

We start this tour through Alfama in Largo do Chafariz de Dentro where, in addition to the old fountain, we can admire old houses, survivors of the earthquake.

We advise a visit to the Fado Museum to get to know our traditional music and to get to know better the way Fado touches our soul.

From this square, we will have a small walk to Rua dos Remédios to admire the Manueline portal of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Chapel.

We return to the square and continue along Rua de São Pedro to the intersection with Rua de São Miguel, where we enter to admire the Church of São Miguel in the square with the same name.

We return to São Pedro and continue to São Rafael: in front of us stands one of the ancient towers of the city wall.

Explore the small street to the left, Rua da Judiaria, and found the rest of the wall as well as one of its old wickets (small door).

Returning to São Rafael, we continue along Rua de São Julião da Praça to the church that has the same name and is well worth visiting!

Follow the road to the left of the Church towards the cathedral: on the way, we can see the wall of the cathedral showing one of the functions of this building (a keep as well as a cathedral).

Rua Cruzes da Sé ends at Largo da Sé. Dominated by Lisbon's old cathedral. It is worth a visit to know the oldest church in Lisbon.

Our tour ends in Sé, but…for the more daring we suggest to continue with route number 3.
